MOBA FIGURE

Northern Ghana and Togo. £850

Fine tchitcheri Figure. Moba Culture, Northern Ghana and Togo

Carved from a medium/light wood, this small tchitcheri Moba figure displays an abstract human form. The figure exhibits a weathered and eroded surface, with typically short legs in comparison to the rest of the long, slender body. Wooden tchitcheri figures typically display limited facial features, a lack of detailed hands and feet, and gender is only rarely indicated. In Moba culture, woodcarvers (tikpierroa) created these figures to represent their ancestors and to place as a shrine offering.

Estimated Period: First Half of 20th Century
