Mossi Initiate's Flute/Whistle, Burkina Faso

£540

Flute/Whistle. Mossi Culture, Burkina Faso

This flute/whistle has been carved into a combinative phallic and abstract figurative form, with 'arms' akimbo. Series of striations decorate the mouthpiece area of the instrument, and feature on the surface of the arms. As a result of handling and use, the flute/whistle has developed a lovely deep used patina. In the Mossi culture, flutes/whistles such as this were played by recently initiated males during masquerade ceremonies, in which the instrument would have hung around the initiate's neck.

Estimated Period: Mid-20th Century (or Before)
