Carved from hard wood, this Nyamwezi mother and child has a wonderful primal presence with great expression. The females slightly bent knees convey the sense of a mother supporting the weight of her baby. The mother rests her hands on her belly in a gesture that emphasises maternity. Tightly clinging to her back is her small child, who wraps its legs around her mother's waist, and nestles its head into the mother's shoulder. The figure's roughly cut and worn surface compliments the presence of the piece.
