This unusual type of ceremonial mask, from the Dodoma region of central Tanzania, takes the form of an abstracted elephant's face. Finely carved from heavy, dark wood, this mask displays a wonderful, powerful primal form consisting of an elongated trunk flanked by an unbalanced pair of large ears and square-shaped eyes.
Tribal art from the Sagara culture is not prevalent; only a few examples of masks are known. Like much of the art from this region it does not follow any stylistic form, in most cases a piece, like in the case of this mask, is an individual artistic expression.
