A beautiful and finely carved representation of an African Jesus on The Cross. The crucifix has many unusual details, for example, at the base of the Jesus's feet is a eagle that represents Saint John, an angel features above the Jesus's head that represents Saint Matthew, at opposite ends of the cross is a bull that represents Saint Luke and a lion opposite that represents Saint Mark. To my knowledge these decorations are unusual to find on an African crucifix. Such pieces were commissioned by a Makonde sculptor and keep in family dwellings in the border region of southern Tanzania as a symbol of faith and also to offer spiritual protection. The cross has a lovely rich all over chocolate-like patina.
