Barma (Bagirmi) doll figures of this type are exceptionally rare. This example displays a distinctive abstract style, particularly in the treatment of the head and coiffure, which are characterised by deeply incised linear decoration, simplified forms, and minimal facial features apart from a subtly modelled nose. During traditional use, figures of this kind were wrapped in cloth or leather and worn by young women as personal adornments.
Such works are rare, in part because the spread of Islam in the region from the 17th century onwards led to the decline of many traditional sculptural practices. However, the carving of these doll figures, together with related equestrian figures, continued into the early 20th century.

Condition: The base of the figure has an old traditional restoration. The two additional added parts,carved in the same type of wood as the body of the figure, appears to relate to the original method of carving or construction and not a later repair/alteration. The outer wear and patina to these two sections is consistent to the rest of the figure.
