SMALL 19TH CENTURY BRONZE HORSEMAN, GHANA OR IVORY COAST

£480

Small 19th Century Bronze Horseman Gold Weight. Possibly Abron Culture, North-Eastern Ivory Coast and Ghana

This nicely cast bronze, possibly Abron equestrian figure depicts a rider seated upright on a horse, holding reins in one hand and what appears to be a spear in the other. Interestingly, the horse's hooves are turned outwards, which is a characteristic of horsemen weights of the period from this region. For similar examples, refer to Tom Phillips' 2010 publication, African Goldweights: Miniature Sculptures from Ghana 1400-1900.

Estimated Period: 19th Century (In Tom Phillips' publication, the horsemen gold weights are dated between the 17th and 19th centuries).
