Leaning in the corner of a traditional mud compound, such tall ladders were used throughout the Sahel Region of West Africa both to access the flattened roof of a domestic dwelling and also to reach a storage granary. This particular ladder is striking due to its height, 2.4 meters and its beautiful snake-like form. The ladder has been carved from a dense heavy honey coloured wood, with signs of a worn surface patina where it has been traditionally used.
