Teke/Yaka Female Figure With Pair of Metal Inserted Eyes, DRC

£850

Female Figure With Pair of Metal Inserted Eyes. Teke/Yaka Culture, DRC

This stylised slender female figure stands in a frontal position, with both feet planted firmly on the ground. The figure displays a characteristically Teke/Yaka columnar-shaped body with slightly bent legs, set apart from each other in a powerful stance. Featuring a pair of metal inserted eyes and small, slit mouth, the figure is crowned with a prominent triple-parted coiffure. A series of punctuations can be found above the figure's eyes. A fine metal sheet of copper envelops the nose area which appears to be a early traditional restoration of sorts.

The convergence of her angular-shaped arms directs attention towards a fetish hole located in the abdominal region. Residues of reddish-brown pigment can be found throughout the surface of the figure, with areas exhibiting a worn patina as a result of handling. A strand of red cloth has been tied around the neck, and coiled metal bangles adorn the figure's ankles.
