This gourd container, used by a Makonde healer to hold traditional medicines, features a finely carved wooden stopper in the form of a giraffe head.
The central body of the container has been decorated with old glass beads and seed pods secured by bindings of raffia fiber. A hole, placed to empower the container, has been carved at the top of the giraffes head. The overall surface is slightly oily with the wooden stopper showing in parts a rich worn patina where it has been traditionally handled.
