Chieftain stools from the Ndengereko Culture of central Tanzania are distinct, as in this early example, with their half-hoop configurations that connect from the seat to the base of the supporting legs.
Such stools are rare and over the years this is one of the few examples I have handled. Also what is interesting about this particular stool is its multiple traditional restorations, to the curved supports and to the surface of the seat. All the restorations are traditional and are a testament to the importance placed with such a stool. Carved from a hard dense wood the surface is errored and worn.
