£680

1940's - 1950's Medicine Container Stopper Depicting a Kneeling Female Figure. Kwere Culture, Tanzania

This piece, taking the form of a miniature figurative wooden carving, is a removable stopper for a traditional medicine container. The stopper is surmounted by a kneeling female figure with a pair of white beaded eyes, poised with her hands resting on her stomach. Her head is crowned with a pronounced parted coiffure, a hairstyle which was - before the 1950's - a feature of Kwere culture. The surface of the stopper has developed a smooth dark patina as a result of use over time.

Estimated Period: 1940's - 1950's
