The Tongwe male figure stands upright, arms by its side, on a small three legged stool. Figures depicted standing on a stool, like this example, are regarded as symbols of power and importance in various cultures throughtout Tanzania. Carved from a heavy wood, the figure exhibits a darks and glossy patina, worn in parts where it has been traditionally carried and handled.
