1950's Lega 'Idimu' Mask, DRC

£2800

Mask (Idimu). Lega Culture, DRC

This fine Lega Idimu mask, with its typically heart-shaped face, bears traces of old pigmentation around the eyes. Attached to the mask is its original and worn raffia fibre costume.

In major performances, the Idimu mask was hung from fences surrounded by all the smaller, individually owned Lukwakongo masks that belong to those in attendance. The mask represents the source of man, who brought the higher Bwami levels to the community.

This Lega mask exhibits a beautiful worn, smooth surface patina as shown in the photos.
