Luvale/Lwena 'Pwo' Mask, Angola-Zambia Border Region

£1100

Pwo Mask. Luvale/Lwena Cultures, Angola-Zambia Border Region

This Pwo mask comes from the border region of Angola and Zambia. Within a large repertoire of mask character types, Pwo– the ‘woman’ or female ancestor – performs a crucial role in transmitting culturally relevant information, mainly in the context of the mukanda male initiation. The ‘woman’ mask represents the ideal model for a ‘fulfilled’ woman.

The mask has been carved from a hard brown wood, and exhibits fine features, such as high cheekbones, a pointed chin and a downcast mouth. Facial markings adorn the surface of the mask, on the forehead, cheeks and chin.
