Fine Large 19th Century High Backed Chair. Wollega Oromo Culture. Welega Province of Ethiopia

A beautifully formed and large in size 19th century high backed chair coming from the Wollega Region of south-western Ethiopia. Typically carved from one piece of wood with a lovely worn surface patina particularly to the surface of the seat and the back rest. The large seat is supported by three arched in form legs with upright stilts to the base of the seat. The backrest is reclining making the chair comfortable to sit in.

High-backed wooden chairs figure prominently in the installation of chiefs among different groups in southern Ethiopia -serving as symbols of rank and entitlement during meetings by the council of elders.
