A series of curved striations, accentuating the eyebrows and forehead, decorate the surface of this fine powerful Ziba mask. Traces of resin are present below the eyes and around the mouth, and the surface of the mask exhibits a worn patina, front and back, as a result of traditional use.
The Ziba are an ethnic group from the far western region of Tanzania, along the lower shores of Lake Victoria. Ziba masks are considered to have borrowed and incorporated features found in masks from nearby north western DRC, such as inserted teeth, a lineal decorated surface and primal expression.
