Set of Tutsi Decorative Household Containers, Rwanda

£480 For Set

Set of Decorative Household Wooden Containers. Tutsi Culture, Rwanda

Carved from a light wood, these containers are decorated with scorched designs of floral, linear and zigzag patterns. The central container, which has been carved in one piece, is a representation of a European teapot on a stand. Flanking the teapot are two containers, each displaying forms more typically found in this region of Rwanda.

This set of containers probably did not serve a functional purpose, but rather, were commissioned to decorate a traditional Tutsi house. As a set of decorative household containers, they would have been displayed alongside other items such as woven grass baskets, woven matts and screens.

Ex Private Collection, UK
