Sukuma Ceremonial Dance or Guardian Figure, Tanzania

P.O.R

Ceremonial Dance or Guardian Figure. Sukuma Culture, Tanzania

This fine and powerful Sukuma figure has an amazing primal expression with inserted aluminium eyes and teeth. Carved without arms, which is typical with such dance or guardian figures, the body has been painted red in order to emphasise its presence.

The eroded feet of the figure suggest that after ceremonial use the figure was placed beneath a protective shelter, acting also as a guardian figure.

Estimated Period: First Half of 20th Century
