Traditional Makonde Medicine Container With Figurative Stopper, Tanzania

SOLD

Traditional Medicine Container with Figurative Stopper. Makonde Culture, Tanzania

This medicine container, decorated with multiple strands of white glass beads, and carved wooden stopper would have been originally used by a traditional healer as a storage container. The stopper is surmounted by a female figure, depicted standing in an upright position with slightly bent knees. The face of the figure features typical Makonde scarification markings, and two droplets of white glass beads decorate the top of the stopper. A worn surface patina is particularly prevalent around the figure’s facial area, where it has been extensively handled.
