Pair of Fur Bone Hair Pins Decorated With Circle-and-Dot Motifs, Western Sudan

£780

Pair of Bone Hair Pins Decorated With Circle-and-Dot Motifs. Fur Culture, Western Sudan

This pair of fine hair pins, made from two thin pieces of bone, exhibit slightly curved, tapering forms. The surface of the pins have been decorated with a series of circle-and-dot motifs - a protective symbol found throughout the African continent.

These pins, made from the same hand, were worn in the hair as a dual decoration. Pieces such as this were worn by the Fur of Western Sudan, but also traded and traditionally worn as far as north-eastern DRC.

Ex Clive Loveless, London.

Estimated Period: First Half of 20th Century
