Ceremonial Pipe. Gogo Culture, Tanzania

Made from a calabash that has been naturally grown into an attractive curved form. The sweeping curved stem of the calabash acting as the handle for the pipe and connecting at its end to an upright wooden pole (hollow) one end of which is joined to the base of the pipe and the other holding the clay cup for the tobacco.

The Gogo tribe inhabit the region of southern/central Tanzania which is an important tobacco growing region. Pipes like this were not used on a daily basis and only during meetings of elders an or ceremonial occasions.

The curved stem of the pipe has been once broken and traditionally restored as shown in the images.
