Late 19th/Early 20th Century Ngombe/Mongo Wicker Shield, DRC

£900

Late 19th/Early 20th Century Wicker Shield. Ngombe/Mongo Cultures, DRC

This large, elongated oval-shaped wicker shield was an emblem of prestige among the Ngombe or Mongo worriers of the DCR. The front of the shield displays designs that are typical of wicker shields from this region. A central wicker band runs vertically down the shield, emphasising its elongated form. Two black diamond shapes adorn the top and bottom of the shield, which is framed by a border of black-dyed wicker.

As a result of its age and use, the shield’s wooden handle exhibits a worn patina. An old label is attached to the shield, probably from a previous collection.

Estimated Period: Late 19th/Early 20th Century

Condition Report
