Ceremonial Hat Resembling a Pith Helmet. Toraja Culture, Indonesia

This fine ceremonial war helmet has been made from a calabash shell, decorated with six large Conus shells and surmounted at the top by a tuft of animal hair.

The hat, probably inspired by the form of a World War I pith helmet, consists of a finely woven rattan brim and a chin strap to hold it in place.
